Especially disturbing in light of the increasingly grave existential threat posed to livable ecology by anthropogenic climate change,74 most Tea Partiers believe that global warming either doesn't exist or that it will result in no serious impact, despite the consensus among climatologists that global warming is occurring, that humans share significant (even primary responsibility), and that the effects are potentially catastrophic.75 As John M. Broder of the New York Times noted in mid-October of 2010, "Skepticism and outright denial of global warming are among the articles of faith of the Tea Party movement, here in Indiana and across the country. For some, it is a matter of religious conviction; for others, it is driven by distrust of those they call the elites. And for others still, efforts to address climate change are seen as a conspiracy to impose world government and a sweeping redistribution of wealth" (emphasis added). A large majority of Tea Party–supported House candidates doubted global warming science and opposed legislation designed to address it. A common Tea Party sentiment on the supposed global warming ruse was expressed to Broder by Lisa Deaton, a small-business owner in Columbus, Indiana, who started We the People Indiana, a Tea Party affiliate. " They're trying to use global warming against the people," Deaton told Broder. "It takes away our liberty. . . . Being a strong Christian," Deaton added, "I cannot help but believe the Lord placed a lot of minerals in our country and it's not there to destroy us" (emphasis added).76
